Best hosting for student's practice and pet projects? Should support rails -
Hi, I'm looking for the cheapest hosting that would allow me to deploy multiple rail and non-rail applications A blog and other stuff is likely to be low in traffic, but still important
Like a portfolio site
What are the best hosting providers for that?
Go with SliceHost (or other VPSs) Since you are a student, Are only doing this, learning and how to use it to use the full stack yourself. Because it is a VPS, because you have to do more about it and a good tutorial is provided in SlashHost for how it is used more and more. It has been rock solid for me so far.
You can get a functional 256MB piece for $ 20usd in a month.
Heroko is a managed solution (they work a lot for you and I have not made a difference in the price because they were just businessmen but they should be a bit expensive - but I only guess about it I'm here). Dreamhost does not give you more control (but very cheap).
Then leave my vote for one month of drinking one and learn Ubuntu server setup (DNS, vhosts, Apache etc., learn capistrano, deployment, SVN and Mars, NGNX, passenger when you learn rail, maybe SMTP Throw in Starling and Verling and Monit / Deity.
